| 抄録 | 이 글에서는 구산이 '불교의 대중화'와 '한국불교의 세계화'를 추구한 활동에 대해 살펴보고, 그리고 '불교의 대중화'와 '한국불교의 세계화'를 추구한 사상적 기반에 대해 검토하고자 한다. 우선 구산은 칠바라밀을 제시하였는데, 이는 구산이 '불교의 대중화'와 '한국불교의 세계화'를 위해 노력한 사상적 기반의 하나이다. 구산은 기존의 육바라밀에 더해 일곱 번째 바라밀인 만행(萬行)바라밀을 제시하고, 그 내용으로 사섭법(四攝法)을 말한다. 이 사섭법의 정신은 중생과 함께 하면서 중생을 위한 삶을 추구하는 것이다. 그리고 7바라밀에서 '한국불교의 세계화'로 연결되는 것이 지계(持戒)바라밀이다. 구산은 '지계'의 의미를 질서와 예의범절을 지키는 것으로 확대해서 해석한다. 그래서 많은 사람이 '지계바라밀'로 인해서 질서와 예의범절을 지킨다면, 우리는 선진문화의 민족으로서 긍지를 되찾을 수 있다고 주장한다. 그리고 구산이 '한국불교의 세계화'를 위해 활동한 사상적 근거 중 하나는 『석사자』의 「우리 것을 되찾자」에서 찾아볼 수 있다. 여기서 구산은 "우리 전통문화의 바탕 위에 서구의 문화를 받아들여 더욱 빛날 수 있도록 한국화되어야 한다는 말이다"라고 주장한다. 그리고 구산의 이러한 주장은 1990년대와 2000년대 한국학계에서 등장한 서구중심주의를 넘어서야 한다는 주장의 선구적 형태가 된다.
Gusan Suryeon(九山秀蓮, 1910-1983) is one of the leading monks of the contemporary era. In this article, I will focus on for Gusan to pursue the popularization of buddhism and globalization of Korean buddhism, and in particular, I will look into the ideological basis to pursue the popularization of buddhism and globalization of Korean buddhism. And the seven pāramitā can be mentioned as one of the ideological grounds on which Gusan worked to popularize buddhism and globalize Korean buddhism. Gusan presents the pāramitā of manhaeng(all wholesome practices) as the seventh pāramitā on top of the existing six pāramitā, and speaks of sa seopbeop(four methods of winning over) as its contents. In addition, one of the ideological grounds for the globalization of Korean buddhism can be found in the article "Let’s take back what is ours" in Seoksaja(石獅子). Here, Gusan argues, "It means that western culture should be accepted on the basis of our traditional culture and become Korean so that it can shine even more." |
