| 抄録 | Der Impulse-Beitrag diskutiert anhand einer Rezension eines neuen Buches von Jørn Borup sowie eines Artikels von Melissa Wilcox, ob eine Dekolonialisierung der Religionswissenschaft notwendig oder sinnvoll ist. Im Zentrum steht die Frage nach dem epistemologischen Stellenwert von Identität (Konfession, Hautfarbe, Ethnizität, Geschlecht, sexuelle Orientierung etc.) und der darauf beruhenden Positionalität. Der Autor argumentiert – Borup folgend – gegen eine identitätsbasierte und aktivistische Religionswissenschaft sowie gegen Wilcox’ „methodologischen Numenismus“. Obwohl er die Ziele der Dekolonialisierung (Diversifizierung, Überwindung alter weißer Männer-Dominanz, Befreiung Marginalisierter) teilt, hält er identitätsbasierten epistemischen Relativismus und strategischen Essenzialismus für kontraproduktiv. Angesichts rechtspopulistischer Tendenzen müsse man vielmehr Ideale wie Objektivität, Werturteilsfreiheit und methodologischen Agnostizismus verteidigen.
This article examines the debate about decolonising the academic study of religion, using a review of Jørn Borup’s recent book and considering Melissa Wilcox’s related work. It focuses on the epistemological significance of identity (confession, skin colour, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, etc.) and the positionality derived from it. Aligning with Borup, the author argues against identity-based and activist approaches to religious studies and rejects Wilcox’s “methodological numenism.” While sharing the goals of decolonisation—diversifying academia, reducing the dominance of old white men from the North Atlantic, and supporting marginalised groups—the author contends that identity-driven relativism and essentialism are counterproductive. In light of growing right-wing populism and its instrumental view of truth, defending the ideals of objectivity, value-neutrality, and methodological agnosticism is crucial. |
