A funeral ceremony is one of the major agendas in life as well as a climacteric to people. Through ceremonies, people comfort the living and farewell the death. People believe that those ceremonies can send the death to another world in a peaceful and accordant way, and by doing these can also maintain the accordance and the balance between the two parts of the worlds and among ethnogenesis. Nowadays, our society is confronting the transition and impact from the new value, traditional funeral ceremony has faced a serious challenging while “being efficient” is what people asks for everything. Therefore, to record and ceremony and music of it is essential. There are three main purposes for composing this dissertation: 1. To provide information for those who might be interested in the funeral ceremony: Through out the field studies and documents collecting, here I conduct some general content analysis of ba — do rites from Taipei area. Therefore, people can get a general idea about the meaning and the ceremony itself. 2. To be part of the evidence of the history: People attend some funerals through out their lives, yet it is still a taboo to talk about death, therefore, most of people don''t really get to know the story and consequence behind it. Through out the funeral, people can only follow the host do what they are told to do, don''t mention abuot the music apply inside it. At present, Nan -Chü which are applied in ba — do rites have confronted a serious problem that very rare people really know about it. The dissertation is to record the Nan - Chü to witness the history. 3. The inquisition of Nan - Chü and the characteristics: Gather Nan - Chü which are used by Shyh — Jiaw Faa - Shy, and analize the struction and contest, which enable people to understand the characterietics of music and the contest of songs.
