Buddhism came to China in the Han Dynasty, and exerted a very profound influence upon the Chinese literati in the medieval times especially in the aspects of their visions of the universe, the outlook on life and death. It urged them to reflect upon the human values, and at the same time enlarge the space of literary imagination, therefore altering a great deal the developing road of Chinese literature.
