The Buddhist monk Yize was a disciple of Huizhong, the Sixth Ancestor of the"Ox- headZen". After Huizhong passed away, Yize moved to Tiantai Mountain to practice Zen, or religious medita-tion. After 40 years of practice, he became so awakened that he formed the so- called Grotto BuddhistPhilosophy. The Grotto Buddhist Philosophy can be characterized as a kind of Zen resembling Taoism,having both the traces of Grotto Buddhism and the features of the "Ox- head Zen" sect.
