Hisamatsu Shinichi; Simplicity; wabi; Zen Arts; Seven Characteristics; aesthetic concepts
摘要
In the end of 20th century, Suzuki Daisetsu flew to America and spread Japanese Zen. The books written by him were mostly about Zen Buddhism. From that time, people in the West were spell bounded by the Eastern wisdom. Zen Buddhist thoughts were closely related to the concepts of paintings, which directly express one’s emotions and experiences. Since then, Zen Buddhism has flourished and gained much popularity among the Westerners, even until now. Base on the Zen Buddhist concept, this research will focus on “The Seven Characteristics” introduced by Hisamatsu Shinichi, in particular, the characteristic of “Simplicity”; and from this concept, discuss how it influences Western and Eastern arts.
