倶舎論根品心不相応行論 -- 世親本論と諸註釈の和訳研究 (3)=On Cittaviprayuktasaṃskāra in the Abhidharmakośa, Chapter II: An Annotated Japanese Translation of the Abhidharmakośa and its Commentaries (3)
The Sarvāstivāda-Vaibhāṣikas insist that possession (prāpti) exists as a real entity (dravyato ’sti). However, the Sautrāntikas deny the existence of possession (prāpti) as a real entity, arguing instead for seeds (bīja). As a result, there was a dispute that is recorded in the Abhidharmakośabhāṣya. This article is an annotated Japanese translation of a dispute regarding possession (prāpti) and seeds (bīja) in Vasubandhu's Abhidharmakośabhāṣya, Yaśomitra's Sphuṭārthā Abhidharmakośavyākhyā and Sthiramati's Tattvārthā Abhidharmakośabhāṣyaṭīkā. With regard to Pūrṇavardhana's Lakṣaṇānusāriṇī Abhidharmakośaṭīkā, I have noted only the passages which differ from Sthiramati's Tattvārthā Abhidharmakośabhāṣyaṭīkā. The current article is a sequel to "On Cittaviprayuktasaṃskāra in the Abhidharmakośa, Chapter II ― An Annotated Japanese Translation of the Abhidharmakośa and its Commentaries (2)―," Journal of Indian and Tibetan Studies (Indogaku Chibettogaku kenkyu), No. 11, 2007. The synopsis of the dispute on possession (prāpti) and seeds (bīja) in the Abhidharmakośabāaṣya and its commentaries is as follows: 2-4-2-3-4. The theory of seeds of the Sautrāntikas is outlined 2-4-2-3-4-1. One who has abandoned defilements (prahīṇakleśa) and one who has not yet abandoned defilements (aprahīṇakleśa); one who is accompanied by defilements (*kleśasamanvāgata) and one who is not accompanied by defilements (*kleśāsamanvāgata) according to the Sautrāntikas 2-4-2-3-4-2. One who is accompanied by virtue (*kuśalasamanvāgata) and one who is not accompanied by virtue (*kuśalāsamanvāgata) according to the Sautrāntikas 2-4-2-3-4-3. Theory of accompaniment (samanvāgama) for the Sautrāntikas ― seeds (bīja) that are not plucked out (anapoddhṛta), are not yet damaged (anupahata), are to be nourished (paripuṣṭa) and have mastery (vaśitva) ― 2-4-2-3-4-4. Definition of seeds (bīja) for the Sautrāntikas ―a distinctive characteristic in the transformation of the life-stream (saṃtatipariṇāmaviśeṣa)― 2-4-2-3-4-5. The Sautrāntika's explanation based on the Sūtras that state 'accompaniment by passion (lobha)' 2-4-2-3-4-6. Conclusion by the Sautrāntikas 2-4-2-3-4-7. Discussion on possession (prāpti) and seeds (bīja) by the interpreters of the Abhidharmakośabhāṣya and Saṃghabhadra 2-4-2-3-5. Vasubandhu completes the dispute on possession (prāpti) and seeds (bīja) by describing an established theory of possesion (prāpti) and non-possession (aprāpti) in the Sarvāstivāda-Vaibhāṣikas
