The point from which Tsongkhapa developed his extraordinary thoughts and in which it culminated is his affirmation of the `Madhyamika` view on dependent arising. He ruled "imputation and emptiness of inherent existence" as the characteristic which differentitates `Prasangika` from `Svatantrika` thus drawing a demarcation line to the view of permanence. Furthermore,as to the question of refuting and asserting tenets, he held the opinion that "his own school asserts (conventional) existence by consequence "whereby he drew a demarcation line to the view of annihilation. Both these ideas were based on his understanding of the theory of dependent arising and,as matter of fact,it is exactly these two concepts which "dependent arising" encompasses.
We first translate what `Nagarjuna` and other Indian pundits had to say about the meaning of the term "dependent arising",and then investigate how Tsongkhapa viewed it. |
