This paper deals with the problem of basic ethical thought of Buddhism and its influence in modern society. The author holds that the concepts of equality, self restraint, mercy and altruism are the basic principles of Buddhist ethical thought. Buddhist ethical thought exerts great influence in modern society: it restrains egotism and hedonism, and it encourages people to help people in need, to bring benefits to society, and to pursue the ideal and lofty realm. The author also puts forward some new views about the significance of Buddhist ethical thought in modern spiritual civilization.
