摘要 | The authors examine the concept of absurdity by tracing it back to its historical roots in British empiricism and continental rationalism, and show that these two modes of thought,by pressing themselves to their limits produced, instead of the absolutely certain knowledge they looked for, only knowledge shot through with doubt, uncertainty, and limitations. It is these unexpected fruits of their search that have resulted in frustration, disappointment, and finally the haunting sense of the absurd. On examining Kierkegaard,Camus, and other absurdists in their attempts to overcome absurdity, the authors show that these attempts are futile and that the absurd is not an ontological category but is merely the product of fear, unwisdom, and failure to grasp the nature of knowledge and the world. Finally, the authors recommend the Taoist and Buddhist response to the challenge of the absurd as the most appropriate and significant in that it makes the challenge itself vanish. |
