摘要 | In 668,when Fazang法藏(643-712) was twenty-five years old and still a layman,he asked to be administered the Bodhisattva Precepts from an Indian monk. This event in his life has remained obscure and has so far received little or no attention fro all those who have dealt with this great Huayan master. In this paper I try to identify the Indian Buddhist monk through an examination of the relevant sources. I tentatively suggest that it was Sakyamitra from Sri Lanka, who was also an expert in longevity drugs at the service of the emperor and who lived at the imperial palace. This identification brings to light Fazang's connection with the imperial court and the Empress Wu in the years before he became a monk in 670,at which time he began to reside at the Taiyuansi 太原寺 in Chang'an,a monastery built in 670 by the Empress for the posthumous well-being of her mother. It also suggests Fazang's involvement in the Manjusri-in-China operation. The visit of Sakyamitra to Mount Wutai is briefly discussed in this connection.
