The T'ang dynasty represented a time when the Chinese empire was at the height of power. It was also a period when culture rose to unprecedented levels and glory. The T'ang dynasty would have a strong impact not only on later generations and dynasties in China, but it was a major influence on the cultures of surrounding states and areas, including Korea, Japan, and southeast Asia. Tunhuang grotto 220 is an ideal example that represents a microcosm of T'ang Chinese culture. A new look at the art in this grotto presents us with a deeper understanding of the numerous facets of T'ang culture. The grotto also offers a point from which to analyze the "T'ang Style," to compare it to that of neighboring areas, and to assess its importance in art history.
