Summary In the past, scholars have only known about the existence of Confucian political ideology, but not that of the Taoist and the Buddhist. In fact, the Buddhist political ideology was implemented very early on,and by the beginning of the 5th century A.D., there were already two variants of the Buddhist tradition established in China, the Devaraja and the Latter Kushan. The founder of the Northern Liang, Juwu Mengxun was the first user of the Latter Kushan tradition. Emperor Taiwu of the Northern Wei also wanted to use the model of the Northern Liang, but failed because of the intervention of the Confucian scholar Cuihao. As a result,Taiwu used the Taoist political ideology throughout his reign. This paper, therefore, covers discussions of the traditions, implementations, and interaction of the Buddhist and the Taoist political ideologies in the Northern Liang and also the period of Taiwu of the Northern Wei.
