摘要 | The writer examines the sources and styles of early Tibetan paintings. The period in question covers the first four centuries of what is known in Tibetan as the "Later Diffusion" of Buddhism, which spans from the end of the 10th to the end of the 14th century A.D. Tibetan painting during this period was influenced by broadly diverse sources and depended largely upon its religious and geographical sources. The styles that developed reflected the variety of cultural and religious ties established by the Tibetans with the outside world over the previous centuries of imperial expansion. The study of over 200 thangkas clearly reveals a wide variety of schools of painting and six major styles:Li lugs in Central Tibet in the earliest period; rGya lugs in dBus and Lho kha; Bal ris in gTsang; Kha che lugs in Western Tibet from the earliest period onward; the "Red-Green-Blue-Gold" style, probably in the same period; and the "Eastern Tibetan" style, which may perhaps be part of many substyles that emerged from each of the major styles. |
