The large number of religions and faiths indicates a lack of unity in this field. Mr. Smart attempts to exhibit some sense of order behind the seemingly unorganized multiplicity. He differentiates three concepts, the numinous, the mystical，and the incarnation concepts, such that the differences in any two religions can be shown to be derived from different relative weights placed on the three concepts.
