摘要
English Abstract Since Buddhism was introduced to China, the people there who had cultivated such high and native moral cultures as Confucianism and Taoism, have accepted the foreign Buddhist culture with a very strong individuality and in a subtle, diversified way. It is a foregone conclusion that the copying of part of the sacred books of Buddhism, that is, a practice resulting from faith in Buddhism has brought about a kind of art from tied to stone and rock abundantly available in China. Now let me call a stone with the Buddha's words inscribed on it as "inscribed stone sutra".
However,so far,a study of Buddhism in China has focused primarily on sutras transcribed on paper,or on the images of the Buddha carved on wood or stone, great interest having been centered solely on artistic viewpoints.
It is time for us to recognize that these very stone sutras are fist-rate materials for testifying specific periods and cultures, and that will complement the part lacking in literature, and they will be positively high-quality materials for corroborative evidence.
In Beginning of inscribed stone sutras in China as "Stupa of Stone in the Bei Liang Period",I have studied, under a tangible theme, what historical meaning lies in the faith in Buddhism as shown in the stone sutras, when they are seen against the historical background of their formation in the history of the Northern Dynasty's Buddhism.
