摘要
Starting from the assumption that education at all levels can exert significant influence in contemporary society, his paper raises some questions about the relationship between university-level Buddhist Studies and the wider academic discipline of the Study of Religions. The notion of 'religion' as a cross-cultural,trans-historical category has been elaborated mainly, though not exclusively,in the West in the last two centuries. The paradigmatic example of Western 'religion' was Christianity, with Buddhism often seen as an exceptional case. The contemporary academic study of religions broadly opposes itself to (and thereby associates itself with) Christian theology as traditionally taught in Western universities. While it might be an exaggeration to say that 'Buddhism is the new Christianity' among Western intellectuals, some of the critical problems associated with traditional theological (and indeed missiological) studies do seem to be re-emerging in the expanding field of Buddhist Studies. Such problems include the limitations of a mono-religious perspective and field of research and a blurring of the distinction between scholar of Buddhism and Buddhist scholar. The current globalisation of university-level educational opportunities prompts us to ask:what kinds of education about 'Buddhism' are available where and to whom; and what approaches to the study of Buddhism are appropriate in a multi-religious and multi-cultural world?
