In recent years, a number of scholars have penned valuable papers on the development of Tibetan Buddhism in Taiwan. Some of those are based on published reports, some on field work in the form of questionnaires or interviews, some analyse the relevant translation literature, some engage in direct evaluation. Whatever approach was chosen,there is really no need to pretend one would be able to add anything worthwhile. Thus it was only after long hesitation that the present writer decided to offer, with all its limitations, an analysis of the first transmission of Tibetan Buddhism to Taiwan and an assessment of its stable development within the last decade. The ideas put forth herewith include a general description of the characteristics of the schools of Tibetan Buddhism and rely on both the research and data published by previous scholars as well as long term personal observation.
