This paper reviews the history of the archaeology of Dunhang Caves in the 20th Century in China, it classifies the history into three stages, The first begun from 1920s and ended in 1949, the archaeology of Dunthuang Caves commenced an Undertaking. The second was set in the period from 1949 to 1976, strength of studies grows in the edrlier peried and became slowlw in the later period. Since 1980, the archaeological construction of Dunhuang Research Academy and other institutions and Universities is forging rapidly ahead. This is the third stage.
