Hui Yuan was a great Buddhist scholar in mid-late period of East Jin Dynasty after Dao An. He lived a simple life in the depth of Lu Mountain, but was able to judge the situation and bring forth new ideas. Besides the sysmatic Buddhist theories, he surpassed his teacher Dao An in various aspects, such as abiding by the commandments, teaching the dharma, practicing the ultimate faith, enlarging the worship to Buddhist statues etc, and therefore became a worthy Buddhist leader in Buddhist society.
