Through a comprehensive study on the ideas of the Buddhist Dharma worship, namely the Buddhist sutra worship recorded in Buddhist sutras, this paper suggests that Mahayaha Buddhism paid special attention to the Dharma worship and resulted in the thought that the Dharma worship was the best one among various ways of worship. By investigating the evolution and characteristics of Buddhist sutra worship during the Southern and Northern Dynasties, the Tang and the Five Dynasties based on Buddhist texts, this paper also presents a new opinion that the sources, structure and closure of the Mogao Library Cave at Dunhuang were closely associated with the Buddhist Dharma worship activities, and resulted from the Dharma worship.
