The Dunhuang manuscript numbered Yu 56 and collected in the Kyōu Shooku in Japan features the first volume of Xuan Ying s Yiqie jing yinyi(Phonetic and Semantic Dictionary for all Buddhist Sutras),which covers volume 36 of the Avatamsaka Sutra(the Garland Sutra). This paper first transcribes the fragmentary manuscript and then compares it with various other versions. On the basis of the comparison, this paper examines the following problems:(1) the relationship between Xuan Ying s and Hui Lin s versions;(2)different compilations of different versions of the Avatamsaka Sutra, namely, the version translated by Buddhabhadra and consulted by Xuan Ying, the Dunhuang Manuscript version, and the transmitted version;and (3)the relationship between the versions in the Tripitaka Koreana, the Jisha Tripitaka and Hui Lin’s version.
