Zhoume-jing,among the Dunhuang documents is considered to be a spurious Buddhist scripture with a little more than 1800 words in 23 volumes, which can be classified into 6 circulation versions. There’s no doubt that this sutra was greatly influenced by local culture as well as Buddhism,e.g.,the curses in Chinese witchcraft, the classics of Taoism, the Buddhist mantras, and other scriptures. An analysis of this sutra reveals contemporary ideas on demagogy and on heaven and hell, while its most practical function is to ward off evils and pray for blessings.
