The south and north sides of the entrance wall in cave 165 of the Northern Grottoes Temple at Qingyang has an image of an elephant-riding bodhisattva and an image of Asura. This Indra on the south side has long been identified as Samantabhadra bodhisattva.Nonetheless, this paper considers it to be Indra, who generally appears as a bodhisattva riding an elephant.Indra and Asura usually appear in pairs guarding two sides of the entrance wall in Buddhist structures.
