By juxtaposing with sculptures from No.8 Grotto in Bingling temple, murals, and buddhism documents, the article proposes that this grotto might have been used as an illustration of Vimalakīrti. Vimalakīrti Sūtra is one of the canons of Mahāyāna Buddhism. When Buddhism was transmitted to China during the Han Dynasty, the idea of pursuing bodhisattva path by laity was responsible for intellectuals need and had influenced profoundly Chinese Culture and Art. Thus, Vimalakīrti became an essential subject in Chinese Grotto Art.
