摘要
The article examines the conundrum brought about by confluence of piety and eros in oratory of medieval monastics in Japan, and its connection with sympathetic response doctrine, that places a mystical union between practitioner and buddha, bodhisattva, or kami. Topics discussed include role of erotics in preaching based on performance-based arts theories of medieval Japan, impact of Buddhist oratory in premodern vocal arts formation, and erotic elements in Buddhist oratorical practice.
