What Should a High-end Digital Edition of Dunhuang Documents Look like? Exploring Best Practices in the Digital Edition of Dunhuang Texts=高端敦煌文獻數碼化版本的樣貌?--探索數碼化敦煌文本的最佳方式
During the last 50 years facsimile editions of Dunhuang manuscripts have become widely available in microfilm, print and in digital format. The next step is to produce full text editions of these texts that will allow them to be queried, analyzed and visualized in various ways. As the Dunhuang corpus provides a unique view on the textual universe of medieval China, the way it is represented needs to improve continuously. More than hundred years after the discovery of Cave 17 even our catalogues and facsimile editions are far from complete. Relatively few texts have been critically edited, and these editions are generally not available digitally. This presentation will try to address some of the issues involved in the production of high-end digital editions of a small number of Chinese Buddhist texts. The aim is to create scholarly, critical editions according to international standards that are computationally accessible and platform independent. We will attempt to identify best practices for the treatment of character variation, manuscript description, editorial intervention, witness alignment and collation in a digital context.
