聖嚴法師的禪法體認及其對大慧宗杲「話頭禪」與宏智正覺「默照禪」的運用=The Understanding of Venerable Master Sheng-Yen’s Chan Practices and His Usage of Dahui Zonggao’s Hua-tou Meditation and Hongzhi Zhengjue’s Silent Illumination Meditation
Venerable Master Sheng-Yen in Dharma Drum Mountain inherits Linji and Caodong dharma transmissions simultaneously, and use hua-tou meditation and silent illumination meditation as personal chan practices and guidance to the disciples. He was invited to the United States in 1976 and started to teach chan practice. He used gradation method to instruct practitioners to reach personal enlightenment. Master emphasized the establishment of chan practice sequence can effectively teach practitioners, and can greatly benefit the modern disciples. This paper mainly examines how Master Sheng-Yen used Dahui Zonggao's hua-tou meditation and Hongzhi Zhengjue's silent illumination meditation, and expounds the integration of both to construct his own meditation system. This process has very import meaning to the chan teaching in the contemporary era, and is of high value to study.
