From the early of 1960s, Mr. CHANG Shu-hong had tried hard in many ways to set up the archaeological team under the then Dunhuang Cultural Relics Research Institute with the support of the Beijing University from Mr. SU Bei, professor of the archaeological Department of The Beijing University. Under the hard condition both for working and living, the members of the archaeological team began to the archaeological study on the site of the Dunhuang Grottoes and had attained some initial achievements on grottoes study and had published the basic and firsthands academic information. Those early initial works had opened up the way for the later research fellows in Grotto archaeology study on the Dunhuang Grottoes.
