In Kucha area, there are mainly three types of grottoes, domed-ceiling grottoes, monk's quarters and central pillar grottoes, depending on the texture and characteristics of sandstone cliff. These grottoemade up of a new type of cave temples combining murals, clay sculptures and architectures. Many delicate painted clay sculptures and murals were made in the grottoes. A master-prentice system was created here and spread into inland China.
