As a representative cave temple of the Ming and Qing dynasties in Gansu Province, the Hongtasi Grottoes are important for understanding the development of Buddhist cave art along the Silk Road and for studying the relationship between Tibetan Buddhist Art and Han-Chinese Buddhist Art as well as the relationship between the relevant peoples and religions.
