This paper analyses the types of the Xiangtangshan Grottoes, makes conclusions about the date of construction, and ends with a summary of the grottoes features. A comparison of these with other grottoes constructed between the Eastern Wei and Northern Qi shows that the caves of the Xiangtangshan Grottoes exhibit some peculiar qualities, and that the features of the caves became the same as those found in caves in other regions after the middle Northern Qi period. This process of change well verifies the shift from foreignization to Sinicization by the Gao family.
