In Andhra Empire, it arised a Buddhist art school in south India. It was called Amarāvatī school which was named after Amarāvatī district. During this period, Amarāvatī school, together with Gandharan and Mathura began to create Buddha image respectively, and developed their own sculpture system. Not only was Amarāvatī one of the schools of Buddha origination, but it also was one of the pioneers of Buddha image in Gupta period. Unfortunately, Amarāvatī school attracted little interesting in former Buddhist art studies. This article based on the observations on the spot of Amarāvatī site, summed up several development stages in Buddha image making in Amarāvatī. And finally, I would like to reassess the importance of Amarāvatī school in ancient Buddhist art, and discuss the position of Amarāvatī in the origin of Buddha image, as well as the great influence to Gupa's Golden Art.
