Facing the abuse of Buddhism and the cultural challenges of Christianity, Yang Renshan as a lay buddhist carried out the activity of Buddhist reform. He proposed to strengthen the educational functions of the temple and create lay buddhist organization form, explore the ways of studying Buddhism, and turn it into reality. He also proposed to actively promote the overseas development of Buddhism. Yang Renshan’s reform on Buddhism is of characteristics of the times. It is a reform presided over by lay Buddhists and participated in by monks, and this reform adopts the mode used by the Christian mission. The essence of the problem to be solved in this reform is the rebuilding of some social members’ confidence for Buddhist belief. It helps to promote Buddhist monks’ cultural quality and the transformation of Buddhist organization in the modern trend, and helps the Buddhist life and education adapt to the needs of modern life. The reform on Buddhism pushed forward by Yang Reshan has a far-reaching influence on Buddhist culture and has practical signiticance to the spiritual construction of the actual society.
