摘要
This paper, first of all, will introduce the epoch-making methodology for the area studies established by the late Professor Yoneo Ishii, a man of profound learning. Then, focusing upon his studies on the Theravada Buddhism in Southeast Asia based on that of Thailand, it will summarize his individual research work which was finally organized as the book entitled Jyozabu- bukkyo no Seiji-shakaigaku-Kokkyo no Kozo- ("The Political sociology of the Theravada Buddhism with special reference to the structure of the state religion") which analyzed the relationship among Sangha (member of Buddhist Order), state and society. This paper will further review his various works mainly related to his new interpretation for such a cultural phenomenon occurred in the thirteenth century in the continental Southeast Asia as 'Sinhalization' or 'Pali-ization' or 'Theravada Buddhici-zation' where once was widely Indian-ized in the earlier centuries. Finally, this paper will briefly present various research works which Professor Ishii left for his successors.
