Master Hsing Yun has been advocating promoting Humanistic Buddhism through culture and education. Widely spread at home and abroad, his literary creations are very influential and popular. As these works are the carrier of his thought, an exploration of his literary creation view will be helpful to a better understanding of Humanistic Buddhism and Buddhist literature. This paper selects three pairs of categories of ancient Chinese literary theories to discuss some of Master Hsing Yun’s basic ideas of literary creation. Emotion and ambition are about the creation intention, whether to express personal emotions or to care about society and country. Master Hsing Yun holds that emotion and ambition are interlinked and can be mutually reinforcing. Language and meaning are about the relationship between language and the meaning it expresses. Master Hsing Yun values the expression ability of language; however, he thinks that language has its limitation in that it cannot express certain profound meanings. Literary grace and essence are about the form and content of writings. Although Master Hsing Yun is well aware of form and rhetoric, he emphasizes more on “essence” and maintains that form serves content.
