Ma Yi-fu had a profound knowledge of Huayanzong's thought, so he often used Huayanzong's thought and method when he talked and discussed Confucian classics with his disciples. Ma Yi-fu often cited the idea of Huayan Sutra and the Confucian classics to explain Confucian classics, but it was mainly reflected in the two epilogues he wrote to his calligraphy of Huayan Sutra in December 1943, it means that the spirit of practice of Huayan Sutra is injected into the Confucian classics. In addition, Ma Yi-fu often interprets the highest category of the Confucian classics by using the One Truth Dharma Realm of Huayanzong, and the Four Dharma Realm, interprets the spiritual level of the Confucian classics by using the thought of the three Saints melding into each other of Huayanzong, interprets the function and characteristics of Confucian classics by using the theory of Five Teachings of Huayangzong. By standing Ma Yi-fu's interpretation of the Confucian classics according to Huayanzong, we can not only improve our understanding of Ma Yi-fu as modern neo-confucianism, but also improve our understanding of Huayanzong.
