摘要
The most characteristic feature of Mahāyāna Buddhism is the chain linked with prajñā (wisdom), karuṇā (compassion), and upāya (skill-in-means). For the Bodhisattva who devotes himself to help everyone to reach final goal of enlightenment, especially upāya is important as the liberative art. In this thesis, after overviewing the concept and the changes of upāya from śākyamuni era to Mahāyāna Buddhism, we will look into the upāya in the Vimalakīrtinirdeśa. Vimalakīrti, un order to convert all kinds of people, directly gets into the world stained with defilements and work for everyone by using numerous kinds of upāyakauśalyas. However he is never stained (vi-mala), thus Vimalakīrti's upāyakauśalya could be classified as the "baseless" (apratiṣṭhita) Nirvāṇa which does not interrupt the course through saṃsāra acoording to the distinction by the Mahāyanasūtrālaṃkāra.
