Temporary ordination is a custom in Myanmar, and Burmese Buddhists value most the ordination ceremonies for novice monks. Traditionally, this ceremony combines a non-Buddhist celebration with Buddhist practice to become a regularized form of a coming-of-age ritual. This research considers textual analysis and preliminary fieldwork, as well as Buddhist groups in contemporary Myanmar and Taiwan, in order to explore the form, function and meaning of Temporary ordination, along with the ways it manifests culture variability.
