Many wooden block printed manuscripts in Chinese, Tangut, Uighur, Tibetan, Mongolian, Sanskrit, and Uighur have been found in Cave B464 of the Northern Area at Mogao, the most significant of which are several inscriptions in Uighur written on the walls of the middle chamber, the connecting corridor, and the back chamber of this cave. Among the Mogao caves found so far, this is the only one with so many Uighur inscriptions. Deciphering these inscriptions not only revises the previous interpretations of Mogao wall paintings, including a relevant image of the Pilgrimage of Sudhanakumara, but also helps researchers to infer that the extant murals could only have been completed no later than the Yuan dynasty, meaning that this particular cave was built sometime during the Yuan dynasty.
