Based on a previous series of research, this paper attempts to systematically interpret the murals in Mogao Cave 285 from the perspective of the Lotus Sutra, and comes to the conclusion that the ideological foundation of the images is the idea of Buddha’s nature, specifically the claim in the Lotus Sutra that all human beings can attain Buddhahood and the Buddhakaya. These murals served the practical purpose of creating the meditation ambience required for Fahua samādhi dhyana as well.
