해심밀경에 나타난 공(空)의 밀의(密意) -- 원측(圓測)의 『해심밀경소(解深密經疏)』를 중심으로=The Secret Meanings of Niḥsvabhāva in the Saṃdhi-nirmocana-sūtra -- understood through Wŏnch'ŭk's 圓測 commentary
이 글은 『해심밀경」의 삼무성설(三無性說)이 유교(有敎)와 공교(空敎)의 모순을 회통시키려는 의도에서 설해진 것이라는 전제 하에 그 교설의 밀의(密意)를 고찰한 것이다. 우리는 이 경의 주석서인 원측(圓測)의 『해심밀경소』에 의거해서 다음과 같은 중요한 의미 를 발견할 수 있었다. 원측에 따르면, ‘무성(無性)’이라는 말은 존재하는 것[有]과 존재하지 않는 것[無]에 대해 모두 진술될 수 있고, ‘무성’의 의미를 이해하는 데 있어 중요한 원칙은 ‘있는 것은 있고 없는 것은 없다’고 전도 없이 아는 것이다. 이러한 원칙에 따를 때, 세 종류 무성의 각기 다른 의미들이 구체적으로 드러난다. 우선 이 교설의 밀의를 이해하는 관건은 변계소집상의 무(無)를 아는 것이다. 왜냐하면 그것의 자성 없음에 의해 나머지 두 종류 자성 없음의 의미가 분명하게 드러나기 때문이다. 우리의 일상적 마음속에서 존재라고 집착되는 상[遍計所執相]의 본질은 가짜 이름[假名]에 불과하고 본래 존재하지 않는 것이다. 따라서 그에 대해서는 ‘그 상들이 본래 존재하지 않는다’는 의미에서 ‘상무성(相無性)’을 설한다. 그러나 그러한 가짜 이름들이 시설되는 실질적 근거로서 연생하는 법들[緣生法]과 그에 내재된 궁극적 진리[勝義]는 존재하는 것이다. 따라서 타에 의존해서 생하는 것[依他起相]에 대해서는, 단지 그것의 생에 있어서 ‘자연적으로 생기는 것은 없다’는 의미에서 ‘생무성(生無性)’을 설한다. 또 ‘의타기상에 본래 변계 소집상이 없다’는 사실에 의해서 현현되는 원성실상(圓成實相)에 대해서는, 그 실상이야말로 ‘궁극적 진리이자 그 자체가 자성 없음’이라는 의미에서 ‘승의무성(勝義無性)’을 설한다. 이상의 설명에 의거해볼 때, 삼무성설의 의의를 다음과 같이 말해볼 수 있다: 이 교설은 우리가 실체라고 여기는 존재의 본질을 ‘무’로서 명확히 규정했다는 점에서 ‘공교’의 통찰을 계승한것 이고 ‘연기적 세계’를 우리가 존재라고 집착하는 것들보다 더 높은 실재성을 가진 존재로 자리매김했다는 점에서는 ‘유교’의 사색을 심화시킨 것이다.
In this treatise, I try to investigate the secret meanings of the three niḥsvabhāva-s 三無性 in the Saṃdhi-nirmocana-sūtra 解深密經, under the premise that they are established to integrate both the teaching of existence 有敎 and that of śūnyatā 空敎. On the basis of Wŏnch'ŭk's 圓測 commentary, I find the following important meaning: Wŏnch'ŭk emphasizes that the word niḥsvabhāva 無性 is given both existence 有 and non-existence 無, and interprets the meanings of niḥsvabhāva on the basis of the principle that we must know that being exists and non-being does not exist. According to Wŏnch'ŭk, the different meanings of the three niḥsvabhāva-s are revealed more concretely. First of all, it is important of us to understand that the parikalpita-svabhāva 遍計所執相 is non-existence, because the other two secret meanings are revealed by its niḥsvabhāva. What is conceived by our imagination, or parikalpita-svabhāva, is a false name 假名 in essence and does not exist. Therefore its niḥsvabhāva means that the image does not exist 相無性. But the existence produced by other factors, or paratantra-svabhāva 依他起相, exists as the substantial foundation which enables us to establish the false name. And its niḥsvabhāva only means that nothing is produced naturally 生無性 because it is produced by other factors. Then again, the ultimate reality, or pariniṣpanna-svabhāva 圓成實相, is revealed by the non-existence of the image in the existence produced by other factors. And its niḥsvabhāva means that it is in itself both the supreme truth and the nature of non-existence 勝義無性. According to the above explanation, I conclude as follows: the doctrine of the three niḥsvabhāva-s succeeded the wisdom of the teaching of śūnyatā, when taking into consideration that the image we regarded as a real entity is defined as non-existence. It deepened the speculation of the teaching of existence, in terms of regarding the existence which owes their origination to various causes and conditions, as a higher reality than what we imagined real.
