이 논문은 『十門和諍論』 <공유화쟁문(空有和諍門)>에 나타난 원효 화쟁논법의 특성을 이제(二諦)·삼성(三性)·불가설(不可說) 논의와 관련된 비유비무(非有非無) 중도관(中道觀)을 중심으로 바라본 연구이다. 원효는 <공유화쟁문>에서 허공(虛空)의 비유를 통해 일미(一味)와 같은 화쟁의 근원을 시사한다. 나아가 공성(空性)과 연기(緣起)에 의거해 이제와 삼성의 관점을 상호 연계시킴으로써 대립된 입장이 본체론적 모순 없이 모두 긍정됨을 밝힌다. 이때 모든 언설은 자성이 없는 가립(prajñapti)이나 희론(prapañca)으로 간주된다. 이러한 화쟁론의 특성은 주장을 관철하기 위한 논법과 달리, 일미, 불가설 실상과 같은 통찰의 견지에서 모순적 주장이 모두 성립함을 드러내는 화회방식으로 볼 수 있다. 공성=연기=중도 제일의제에 의거한 화쟁의 바탕이자 불가설로서의 일미는 중도실상을 나타낸다. 이는 이제·삼성과 상의 상관적으로 연계되어 공통의 의미를 도출하는 허공과 같은 바탕으로 기술된다. 또한 세제인 의타기성과 제일의제인 원성실성 및 유제(有諦)와 무제(無諦) 간의 불일불이 구도가 부각된다. 나아가 제4구의 부정과 제3구의 긍정이 양방향으로 순환되는 상의 상관적 논리를 드러낸다. 이렇듯 불가설 중도에 기반한 진·속 간의 역동적 상호연계 속에서 모든 쟁론은 일미로 화회된다. 이는 유(有)·무(無)·역유역무(亦有亦無)·비유비무뿐만 아니라 중(中)에도 집착하지 않는 방편적 화용론이다. 따라서 <공유화쟁문>의 이제 중도론은 언어나 사유로 상정된 모든 종류의 집착을 타파하는 연기적 사유로 볼 수 있다. 화쟁 또한 공과 유를 일의성(一義性)으로 회귀시키며 새로운 의미를 생성하는 비일비이론에 의거한 의미의 순환이론이다.
This study aims at revealing the characteristics of the logic of hwajaeng (harmonizing the disputes) shown in “The Gate of Hwajaeng between Emptiness and Existence” in Wonhyo (617-686)’s Ten Approaches to Hwajaeng, while focusing on his view of the middle expressed as the logic of ‘neither existence and non-existence’ with reference to the twofold truth, three natures and examination of inexpressible nature (nirabhilāpya). Accordingly, Wonhyo shows that the contradictory positions are all embraced without falling into any ontological contradiction by interconnecting the discourse of the twofold truth and three natures based on the principle of emptiness and dependent origination. Here, every discourse is regarded as a mere designation (prajñapti) or a conceptual elaboration (prapañca) without substance. Further, the discourse of hwajaeng can be viewed as the way to show the consistency among the contradictory arguments from the perspective of one flavor as an expression of ultimate reality of inexpressibleness. One flavor as the ground of hwajaeng, as well as the inexpressibleness, reveals the true reality of the middle based on the equation of emptiness = dependent origination = ultimate truth. It is described as a void-like ground deducing a common meaning interconnected with the twofold truth and three natures. As such, the ‘neither identical nor different’ scheme is emphasized between the interdependent nature as secular truth and the perfect nature as ultimate truth. Likewise, all disputes are harmonized into one flavor of the middle in the dynamic interconnection between the ultimate and secular. Further, it shows pragmatic nature not even sticking to the middle, let alone to each phrase of ‘existence,’ ‘non-existence,’ ‘both’ or ‘neither.’ Hence, the discourse of ‘neither existence nor non-existence’ as the middle in “The Gate of Hwajaeng between Emptiness and Existence” is revealed as the idea of mutual relation, breaking down all sorts of attachments represented by language and thought.
