아미타불 신앙의 기원과 전개에 대한 구명 -- 염불신앙의 본래 의미와 새로운 조망을 위한 시론=Examination of the Origins and Development of Amitābha Buddha -- New Perspectives on the Original Meaning of Recollection of the Buddha (Buddhānussati)

摘要
본고는 염불 신행의 교학적 의미와 실천적 기초를 새롭게 정립하려는데 목적이있다. 염불은 대승불교 기원과 맞물려 있다. 염불의 불은 아미타불이든 비로자나불이든 석가모니불이든 간에 모두 빛 개념에 있다. 보살 개념 또한 마찬가지이다. 하지만 이를 간과하고 아미타불과 극락정토는 이교(異敎)로부터 기원한다고추정되었다. 흔히 아미타의 무량광 개념이 이란이나 힌두교의 태양신에 유래한다는 것이다. 아미타유스의 무량수와 극락정토도 마찬가지라 한다. 또한 극락정토가 삼계에 특정되어 있지 않는 것도 외부 기원설로 본다. 이러한 이유로 현재까지불교학계는 아미타와 무량수 그리고 극락에 대해 외부 기원설에 멈추어 있다. 그래서 불교 내부 기원설로 아미타불 신앙의 불교적 기원을 밝히는 것은 난제 중의난제로 여겼다. 이러한 점에서 본고는 아미타 염불 문제를 구명하려 시도하였다. 이를 위해 광명의 붓다관이 초기 불교로부터 근거하고 있음을 논증한다. 아미타불의 붓다 개념이 불교 내부로부터 기원하여 전개되었음을 밝힌 것이다. 마찬가지로 무량수불 개념이나 극락정토의 개념도 초기불교로부터 연원함을 밝히고 있다. 즉 아미타 신앙의 핵심적인 개념들이 모두 불교 내부에 기원하고 있음을 전거를 들어 하나하나 밝히고 있다. 어원적인 측면은 물론 사상적인 모든 방면에 이르기까지 불교 내부에 기원하여 전개되었음을 밝힌 것이다. 결론적으로 무량광과무량수는 초기불교의 붓다 개념에 근거하며, 극락정토 또한 불교 삼계 밖의 이교가 아닌 불교의 삼계안에 있다는 것이다. 그리고 구체적으로 색계 제사선천인 정거천으로 특정하고 있다. 이처럼 아미타염불을 불교 내부 기원으로 증명될 때 초기불교의 신앙도 대승불교의 신행도 동시에 새롭게 조명될 수 있다. 본고를 시작으로 점차 불교 본래의 정토염불신앙의 근본 의미와 핵심이 분명하게 드러나게될 것이다.
The purpose of this paper is to newly establish the doctrinal principle and practical bases of Recollection of the Buddha. Generally, it is assumed that Amitabha and Pure Land might have been originated from other religions. Immeasurable Light and Life of the Buddha is said to have possibly been originated from solar deities of Iranian religion or Hinduism. The concept of Pure Land is also supposed to have been originated from other religions. The reason is that the Pure Land is not located in the three world system(tiloka) of the Buddhist cosmology. Until now, Buddhist scholars are tied to theories of external origins on Amitābha religion. For this reason, identifying the Buddhist origin of the Amitabha faith has been regarded as a difficult challenge. This paper might have, however, successfully solved the puzzle of this problem. It is proved that the concept of Amitabha Buddha originated from Early Buddhism. The same is true in the concept of Infinite Life and Pure Land. This paper proves that all of the core concepts of Amitabha faith are rooted in Buddhism. It is proved that the etymological side and the conceptual aspects of all Amitabha faith ware developed from Buddhism itself. Amitabha and Amitāyus Buddha are fundamental Buddhist concepts since early Buddhism. The Pure Land is not outside the three worlds of Buddhist cosmology. Pure Abodes(Suddhāvāsa) is definitely at the fourth world of Form Realm(Rūpadhātu) in the system of three worlds. These facts clearly reveal the original meaning and core of Recollection of the Buddha.
