이 논문은 동곡 일타의 선사상을 그의 작품에 의해 분석한 것이다. 그가 해설한 『梵網經菩薩戒』 속에 나타난 사상은 법성종의 입장에 기반하고 있다고 필자는 보았다. 그래서 필자는 법성교학의 입장에서 그의 사상을 조망했다. 법성교학이란 모든 중생들은 누구나 할 것 없이 모두 본각진심을 가지고 있다는 믿음에 기초를 두고 있다. 이런 일타의 사상은 크게 셋으로 요약할 수 있다. 첫째는 ‘水中蓮花의 철학’인데, 이는 속제 속에 진제의 순수성을 강조하는 것이고, 둘째는 ‘普賢行願의 철학’인데, 이는 부처님의 말씀대로 수행하는 것이고, 셋째는 ‘法古創新의 철학인데’, 이는 옛 제도를 계승하면서 새 시대에 알맞게 변화시키는 것이다. 일타의 선사상은 실천과 이론 면에서 불교의 여러 측면을 아우르고 있는데, 예를 들면 화두를 관찰하는 ‘看話’와, 화두를 설명하는 ‘說話’의 두 측면을 병행하되 계와 율을 지키면서 하는 것이다. 이 모두를 필자는 법성교학의 지평에서 이해하고 조망했는데, 이 점은 한국 근현대의 여타 선사들에도 적용되는 것이었다.
This paper explores the Seon thought of Donggok Ilta through an analysis of his writings. Given Ilta’s viewpoint, as presented in his Beommanggyeong-Bosalgye (梵網經菩薩戒, Bodhisattva Precepts of Brahamajala Sutra), I see his thoughtas being based on the “doctrine of dharmata (法性宗).” Therefore, I’ve attempted to interpret Ilta’s thought through the perspective of the “philosophy of dharmata (法性敎學)”, which is founded on the belief in the existence of the “originally awakened mind (本覺眞心)” innate to all human beings. Some of the prominent aspects of Ilta’s thought can be summarized as the “philosophy of lotus in water (水中蓮),” which emphasizes the pursuit of the "absolute truth (眞諦, paramartha-satya)" while referring to the “worldly truth (俗諦, samvrti-satya),” the “philosophy of practicing Samantabhadra (普賢行),” which stresses the conduct of goodness in accordance to the Buddhist teachings, and the “philosophy of adopting the old⋅creating a new (法古 創新)”, which advocates practical reformation of Buddhist education based on the basic principles of Buddhism. The Seon thought of Ilta encompasses various aspects of Buddhism both in terms of theory and practice - for example, the combination of “contemplation of hwadu (看話)” and “quotations from old masters” as well as the emphasis on the observance of precepts (持戒) and rules (戒律) - are eventually to culminate in the actual practice of hwadu (話頭, big doubt), which can be understood in the same light as the “philosophy of dharmata” asserting the originally enlightened nature of mind. This perspective is also shared by many other Seon masters throughout the history of Korean Buddhism.
