Korean Buddhist circles have paid close attention to the rise of Humanistic Buddhism in Taiwan for more than 10 years. Foguang Institute in Korea has twice held conferences aimed at the understanding and analysis of Taiwanese Humanistic Buddhism. It is considered that this kind of understanding and communication between Korea and Taiwan would help improve the standard of lively Buddhist communication and studies among East Asian countries. The author would like to propose three ways for deep research on Humanistic Buddhism in the future. First, it is necessary to analyze the reason behind the development of Buddhism in Taiwan from the angle of Taiwan’s modern and contemporary history. Second, it is also necessary to analyze the influence of folk religious beliefs, such as Confucianism, on the theory and practice of Humanistic Buddhism. Third, it is considered that the advantages and disadvantages of Humanistic Buddhism could only be grasped by discussing whether Humanistic Buddhism’s different characteristics including its propagation and institutional practices, chosen style similar to western norms, as well as the secularization of Humanistic Buddhism, especially the issue of commercialization.
