摘要
본고는 명상과 선이 가지고 있는 개념 및 외연에 대한 접근을 통하여 그 둘의 관계를 고찰하는데 초점을 두었다. 우선 넓은 의미에서 명상의 개념 안에 선을 포함시켜 이해하는 것은 타당하지만 잘못하면 선이 가지고 있는 본래의 의미가 퇴색될 수 있음을 살펴보았다. 그리고 선은 남방불교의 명상과는 다른 의미를 갖고 있으면서도 불교 명상의 범위 안에 포함시켜 이해할 수 있음도 살펴보았다. 또한 현대의 다양한 명상프로그램의 입장에서 간화선이 가지고 있는 한계를 대중성이라는 입장에서 고찰하였다. 간화선은 수행을 통하여 얻어지는 건강, 심리적 안정 등의 일차적 문제를 염두에 두기 보다는 종파적 한계와 수행의 대상이 특정 근기나 대상에 치우쳐 있다. 마지막으로 현대의 다양한 명상프로그램은 심신의 건강, 행복, 스트레스 해소 등의 일차적 목표에 치중하여 많은 명상의 부작용에 노출되어 있다. 선의 기본 관점은 불교의 근본 목표를 추구하며, 일상성을 중시하며, 자리이타의 대승정신을 추구하며, 수행과 삶의 일치를 추구하는 것으로 현대의 범람하는 다양한 명상프로그램들이 가진 한계를 극복하는데 도움을 줄 수 있을 것이다.
