摘要
인도불교사에 관한 국외 연구를 간략히 요약하여 보면, 불교문헌사, 예술사, 교단사 등 이미 1900년대 중반에 인도불교사에서 쟁점이 되는 주제를 치밀하게 다루고 있다는 것이다. 최근에 인도불교사에 관한 연구는 대체로 근현대 불교 부흥운동에 관한 것들이다. 국외연구와 국내 연구를 비교해보면 양과 질에서 크게 뒤떨어지고 있다. 국외 연구가 다양한 주제를 심도 있게 다루고 있는데 비해 국내연구는 소수 연구자에 의한 논문만이 몇 편 보일 뿐이다. 남방불교사 즉 동남아시아불교사에 관한 연구는 근현대불교의 정치, 문화, 불교의례 등 현재 진행되고 있는 불교의 신행모습을 연구하는 분야가 두드러진다. 이런 현상은 동남아시아가 유럽 제국의 식민지 역사를 지니고 있어서 일찍부터 연구되었기 때문이라고 보인다. 국내 연구는 현대 동남아시아불교에 집중되어 있으며, 특히 정치 상황과 관련된 것이 다수이다. 2000년대부터 관련 논문들이 하나둘 나타나고 있기 때문에 동남아불교 연구는 초기단계라고 해야 할 것이다. 인도불교사 및 남방불교사에 관한 국내 연구는 현재 초기단계이다. 몇 가지 발전 방안을 제언하였다.
As India is the land of Buddhism’'s birth, the early western Buddhist scholars like Lamotte, devoted themselves to the research on Indian Buddhism, including the history Buddhism in India. There have been a lot of books and articles on the history Buddhism in India, written by a many good scholars using varous methodologies. To the contrary, there have been few research work available in Korean done by Korean scholars. Buddhism in Sri Lanka and South-eastern Asia has received a good deal of attention from many western scholars since the beginning of Buddhist studies. Studies on this area include not only monasticism, but the status of Buddhist institutions in lay society, Buddhism and politics, and other issues. On the other hand, In Korea few scholars have been involved in the academic researches on this area. At the end of this paper, I make some suggestions to improve Korean study of this field.
