근대학문의 문헌학적·역사학적 연구방법론의 도입과 자료 집성에 의해 시작된 조선시대 불교 연구는 지난 100여 년간 많은 성과를 축적해 왔다. 본고에서는 20세기 전반과 후반, 그리고 최근의 조선시대 불교 연구 성과를 개괄하고 향후의 과제와 전망을 제시하였다. 20세기 전반 식민지시기에는 조선시대 불교 전체를 개괄하는 책이 나올 정도로 다양한 주제에 걸친 선구적 연구가 시도되었다. 하지만 당시 전통의 부정과 타자화에 의해 조선시대 불교에 대한 ‘억압과 쇠퇴’의 도식이 상식으로 굳어졌음을 부정할 수 없다. 20세기 후반에는 연구 저변의 확대와 한국의 역사 및 전통을 바라보는 주체적 시각의 형성으로 분야와 주제의 발굴, 성과의 확산이 이루어졌다. 더욱이 2000년 이후 최근 10여 년간 조선시대 불교를 새로운 관점에서 접근하는 시도가 이루어지면서 연구 논저의 양과 질 모두에서 주목할 만한 성과를 내고 있다. 또한 각종 문헌자료의 집성과 번역이 이루어지고 있고 그 결과물에 대한 인터넷 정보서비스가 추진되고 있다. 하지만 조선시대 불교의 실상과 정체성을 명확하게 규명하기 위해서는 구체적 사실의 입증과 객관적 해석 틀의 적용이 요청되며 해결해야 할 과제가 산적해 있다. 아울러 ‘조선’의 지역성과 동아시아 불교의 역사성을 동시에 고려하면서 특수와 폐쇄가 아닌 보편과 확장의 가능성을 넓혀야 할 것이다.
Korean Studies of Joseon Buddhism began when modern methodologies and historical research tools were introduced to the Korean people at the beginning of the 20th century, and have accumulated outstanding accomplishments for the past century. In this article, accomplishments and shortcomings featured in the studies of Joseon Buddhism in both the early and latter halves of the 20th century, as well as the recent trends in studies of the same area, are examined in details in order to evaluate past deeds appropriately and suggest relevant future tasks. In the early half of the 20th century, during the Japanese occupation period, pioneering studies were announced, in the form of publications containing comprehensive Buddhist studies. But the Korean traditions were being ignored and oppressed at the time, so a negative image (“a deteriorating religon”) was imposed upon Joseon Buddhism as well. In the latter half of the 20th century, new academic themes and areas came to draw attention, and new accomplishments were achieved thanks to enhanced research circumstances and the formation of an independent perspective to view Korean history and traditions. For the past 10 years in particular witnessed new attempts to interpret Joseon Buddhism from various viewpoints, which resulted in raised quality and increased number of announced works. Texts are being re-accumulated and translated, and are being reformatted for Internet access and online service systems. But in order to really determine the reality of Joseon Buddhism and most of all its identity, examination of factual details and objective interpretation are required above all else. And still there are so much to be done. Also, the local nature of Joseon Buddhism, and elements it shared with the Buddhism of East Asia, should be considered too, if we are going to broaden the range of our discussion and expand it to include other important themes and agendas.
