南北傳入世佛教在台灣的會遇:以佛教弘誓學院與泰國國際入世佛教協會的交流為例=The Encounter between Therevada Engaged Buddhism and Mahayana Engaged Buddhism in Taiwan: The Interaction between Buddhist Hongshi College and International Network of Engaged Buddhists
“Engaged Buddhism” has become the mainstream of contemporary Buddhism in the world, and has gradually attracted attention. The “Humanistic Buddhism” proposed by Ven. Taixu and Yinshun Master is generally regarded as similar to the concept of “Engaged Buddhism”. The relevant researches in Taiwan’s religious academia are mostly based on the discussion and practice of humanistic Buddhism on both sides of the Taiwan Straits. They rarely touch on the international perspective of other parts of Asia and the global Buddhist movement. This article takes the cause of Taiwan’s interactions with International Network of Engaged Buddhists (INEB) as the main axis, and discusses Taiwan’s Engaged Buddhism and its connect with international Buddhist community. Firstly, this thesis explores the background of the rise of the Engaged Buddhism in Taiwan, how to promote the socially engagement of contemporary Taiwanese Buddhists. This makes contemporary Taiwanese Buddhism show such unique features, introduces two important leaders: Ven. Chuandao and Bhiksuni Ven. Chaohwei, their viewpoints and important practices on Engaged Buddhism. Then I will introduce the Therevada Engaged Buddhism, and use INEB as a representative organization to explore the history and important figures of the Engaged Buddhism movement in the Asian countries. INEB 2007 and 2017 global conferences were held in Taiwan’s Buddhist Hongshi College. This article is a historical record of the interactions between Therevada Engaged Buddhism and Mahayana Engaged Buddhism., and analyzes its inspiration for religious dialogue.
